Colleen and Eric Whiteley from Brooklyn received the NASA/Etsy Space Craft Grand Prize for Best of Show for their detailed design of the Northstar Table. The table features a North Star design that, when pressed, opens a hidden drawer.

“The table was inspired by my grandfather who worked for Grumman. The inlay on the top of the table represents the stars’ alignment on the night of the first moon landing. Grumman built the Apollo Lunar Module (LM) which was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft built for NASA’s first mission to the moon. I grew up listening to my grandfather tell stories of working on this amazing project, the super high tech materials and the excitement of helping put the first people on the moon. To most in 1969 this mission must have seemed impossible and riddled with danger, but my grandfather said there wasn’t a doubt in the minds of his crew that the LM would make it to the surface of the moon and back safely. They had expertly crafted and inspected every inch of the module.”

Ever wondered how you would shoot a Hasselblad in space?
Wonder no more, Hasselblad have made available the manual they put together for Nasa astronauts in 1994. It includes basic operation instructions, as well as tips for space specific photography.

On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It’s a super “perigee moon”—the biggest in almost 20 years.

On March 13, 2011, floodwaters lingered along the Japanese coast near the city of Sendai, in the aftermath of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. An Expedition 26 astronaut took this photograph from an altitude of 220 miles (350 kilometers) up on the International Space Station. North is at upper right. This picture shows an area north of Sendai, and part of the city of Higashimatsushima appears along the right edge of the image.CREDIT: NASA/JSC
